Beit Al Oud (Where you can learn to play Arabic lute!)

Naseer Shama is an Iraqi-born oud (Arabic lute) master who travels the world performing classical Arabic music, a tradition slowly shrinking but still thriving if you know where to look. He runs one place you’ll find it: a small school for oud in Islamic Cairo behind Al Azhar mosque. If you’re going to be in Cairo a while, they’ll set you up with an instrument and cheap lessons. If you’re just passing through, stop by on any Saturday, Monday, or Wednesday and you’ll likely find an impromptu concert, or at least an excited young musician to play a few songs for you.

    • i do not have the number…it is easiest, i think, if you go to the center and they will help you pick out an oud and assign you a teacher, who you will then coordinate your lesson times with.

good luck! it’s a beautiful place.
